How long does meadow grass seed take to grow?
There are many different types of meadow grass seen which does mean it will depend on the species you’re growing. Usually, meadow grass takes up to about two weeks to germinate. It is important to ensure the grass has plenty of sunlight, oxygen and water to help it grow.
How to prepare the ground for meadow grass seed?
Ground preparation is important to ensure your meadow grass can grow. We recommend clearing the ground as much as possible, once cleared, create a clean level seedbed. After the meadow grass seed has been scattered, roll the ground after to ensure the seed is embedded in the soil.
If you are adding meadow seed to existing grass, make sure to cut the grass back short. Then rake or scarify the ground before scattering the seed and again rolling the ground to ensure the soil is embedded in the soil.
Can I sow meadow grass and wildflower seeds together?
Yes, meadow grass seed and wildflower seeds can be sown together. This helps create a healthy, diverse and beautiful meadow while helping wildlife thrive. This combination helps maintain an ecological balance, supporting a variety of plant and animal life.
How much meadow grass seed do I need to sow?
Here at Boston Seeds, we recommend sowing 10g per square metre for small areas, for larger areas we recommend sowing grass at 5g per square metre. If you want to leave room to also sow wildflower seed, we recommend sowing meadow grass seed at 5g per square metre.
When should I cut back my meadow grass after sowing?
Native meadow grass seed should be sown in Spring or from March to September, and should begin to establish itself within two weeks. Once grown the grass in your meadow should be left to grow during the summer and cut back in early autumn. Meadow grasses are perennial and will return year after year.
