Ipheion: Advice On How To Grow Them (And Why!)
Small, perennial flowering plants, the Ipheion also have the name Star Flower. This is taken from their star-shaped, fragrant flowers that bloom early in the spring. Originally native to South America, they are becoming a firm favourite in gardens, especially container gardens, due to their small size.
Also known as the Spring Starflower, they often have white or pale blue flowers and are cultivated for ornamental purposes. Reaching heights, no more than 15-20cm, their pleasant lily-like fragrance is delightful, and attracts bees and other pollinators, where the early food source is valuable to them.
Fun Facts
Belonging to the onion family, they are a native species to Argentina and Uruguay. Hence, why they are such sun worshippers!
How to grow
Suitable for sowing in pots as well as in rockeries, they are perfect for use in bulb lasagnes as a top layer. Planting in a border, they will naturalise over time.
Plant around 10cm deep and space them apart 5-10cm. They will do best in well-drained soils and prefer a sunnier spot in gardens, borders or pots.
Species & Styles
Previously, they have been classified under the genera Brodiaea or Triteleia, but are now recognised as a distinct genus. There are various cultivars of Ipheion, some with stronger colours than the original species.
